About Me

Like I mentioned before, I have no idea what I'm doing, but I'm having fun learning and doing...this. OK, so obviously I've picked up a bit here and there so I'm documenting my journey from clueless to cultivating.

I'm just your average suburban dad who looked at his boring, grassy backyard one day and said to himself, "I'm going to build a garden bed." I then grabbed my then-two-year-old son and hoofed off to Home Depot to get...wood? Screws? I had no idea.

My son, taste-testing the first garden bed for some reason.

When we got home, we hit the backyard, screwed together the treated 2ft 2x6 planks to the untreated 2x2 posts I got from the cull pile and spray painted it all purple for some reason. I then filled it with some garden soil and plant starters (tomato, greek oregano, basil, and thyme) and stood back to bask in the glow of being a full-on farmer.

I'm pretty sure it was at least exterior paint.

That little garden bed was the start of an expensive, but satisfying hobby that, like so many others, created amazing tomatoes that I shared often with co-workers, 7 cucumbers, a few peas, and many other things that grew or didn't but were awesome to watch.

That little garden bed.

I set up a new Instagram this new account called "Junk Gardener," as an homage to how I think I'm doing and how the garden looks.

After a few things took off, I took some pictures with my smartphone and put them on IG. People seemed to enjoy them, so I kept doing it and documenting my successes and failures to hopefully let people know that it's not about growing the best veggies ever, but having fun while learning.

I realized that I enjoyed the process of caring for these living things, even if I wasn't entirely sure how to do it right, which I can also say about my kids. So this is how my journey into gardening began, fueled by a bland yard, a thirst for knowledge, and a desire to bring a little more green into my life eventually.
